Glenn plays the numbers game
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Preparing for the visit of his former club Southampton is not an easy task for Glenn at the moment — it’s hard working on a gameplan with being so short on numbers at the training ground.
Like many other managers in international week, Glenn has to contend with the absence of a stack of senior players.
Sergei Rebrov, Steffen Iversen, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Neil Sullivan, Gary Doherty, Simon Davies, Christian Ziege, Ledley King and Alton Thelwell are the first-teamers away on national service, and Glenn will be hoping that they all return in one piece to allow him three days to prepare for the Sunday fixture against the Saints.
“That’s always the case,” reflected Glenn. “It’s madness really, we’ve got about ten players away — with the under-21s as well.
“So yes, there is not a lot we can do, you keep your fingers crossed and wait by the phone on the Wednesday night and Thursday morning in case there are any injuries.
“We’ll have a session Thursday afternoon and then we’ll prepare for Southampton.”
Glenn indicates that a little bit of the enforced break might be used to rest players not called up by their countries, but hopes the gap will assist in speeding along the recovery of the injured players.
“They’ll be some days without focus on matches, but there has been reserve games to prepare for. There are players coming back to fitness who need games, so there might be a behind-closed-doors game or a training match.
“There might be a bit of time off, I think it’s an opportunity to let them have a bit of a rest. We had a hard pre-season, it will be nice to let the staff have a bit of time off as well so it could be a good thing.
“Obviously the downside is coming back so late on the Thursday and rounding everyone up to prepare for an important game.
“We’re fortunate in that we play on a Sunday so we get an extra day.”
