Glenn on defensive

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn Hoddle paid tribute to his defence after Sunday's 2-0 Premiership against Newcastle United.

Highly-critised after the 5-3 home defeat against Manchester United, goalkeeper Neil Sullivan and his back five - and then back four after Mauricio Taricco's departure - held firm against all Alan Shearer and co could throw at them at St James' Park.

Another sublime half of passing football putting us in the driving seat but the boss, although delighted again at our offensive display, seemed happier still with the clean sheet.

"It was a lot of hard work out there," he pointed out. "We worked well when we had the ball. We made angles, we passed the ball well, particularly in the first half.

"In the second half, with us 2-0 up, you know they were going to throw a lot of men forward but our back four coped and our defensive side coped better than it has in the past.

"If we keep clean sheets we'll open teams up and score enough, I've always felt that.

"So we're trying ot get better and better on the defensive side. But it's becoming harder and harder to keep clean sheets in the Premiership.

"Look at how United are conceding. This division is very difficult. There is no game that can't go either way. United came here and got beat. We were beating United 3-0 and ended up losing."

Glenn reiterated his plan to silence the Toon Army - the side did just that with Darren Anderton's early goal and our dominance in the first half.

He added: "The last two times Spurs have been here they've conceded early.

"The crowd here is passionate, intelligent and gets behind the team. We nullified that. We had possession of the ball and they found it hard to get through us.

"We managed to get ahead and I was a little disappointed we didn't get the third goal when they were taking a lot of chances in the second half. We just needed a bit more calmness about it.

"But we have this little bit of belief about us away from home. We've gone to Sunderland, unfortunate at Everton, played well at Anfield and this win gives us even more belief."
