Glenn on defensive

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn Hoddle refused to get carried away by our five-star performance at Portsmouth as the reality of pre-season planning kicked in at Fratton Park.

It was hard not to be impressed by the passing display and clinical finishing from Sergei Rebrov (2), Teddy Sheringham, Steffen Iversen and Stephen Clemence in the 5-2 victory.

But it was the goals conceded — two towering headers from ex-Spur Peter Crouch (pictured) — that dominated the manager’s thoughts immediately afterwards.

“With the ball it was good,” said Glenn. “We had five goals and could have scored more. But defensively it wasn’t good enough, nowhere near good enough. We know we have a lot of work to do.

“It was a super performance with the ball. We passed the ball, got behind them, took goals well with Teddy and Steffen getting us on our way.

“But I was disappointed with the goals we conceded and I felt, especially first half, we were all over the place and we need to defend better than that at the top level.”

The win made it five out of five in pre-season but Glenn advised to take little notice of results.

“I’ve been in pre-seasons with Tottenham over the years when we’ve been unbeaten and then gone out and lost our first two games,” he said. “So don’t read too much into it.

“You can’t judge us. If we were losing games I would say the same. It would be silly to do that because we used a lot of fresh legs in the second half and Portsmouth were tiring.

“All in all it was a great run out for us. The players will have a mini-rest now because they have worked ever so hard and we will regroup and get on with the business of building it up even better.”
