Glenn left stunned
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Glenn Hoddle said he would have laughed at anyone suggesting that we'd lose 5-1 at Middlesbrough having dominated the early exchanges at the Riverside.
We retained possession at will in the first 20 minutes, created a couple of chances and the home fans were getting restless when Boro opened the scoring against the run of play.
Even the Teesiders' boss Steve McClaren admitted: "Tottenham started well, Teddy Sheringham missed a couple of chances but we got the breaks which for a couple of weeks we haven't had."
That first strike from Szilard Nemeth started a spell of three goals in five minutes for Steve McClaren's men including Chris Perry's controversial red card and, with 10 men for 65 minutes, we eventually went down 5-1.
"You saw the first 20, 25 minutes and we were totally in control," Glenn told the gathered press afterwards.
"We set out a team to try and win the game and if anyone would have said to me at the time that we were going to lose the game 5-1 I would have laughed at them.
"We had the chances, didn't take them and one slip at the other end and we're 1-0 down.
"The key moment then came and okay, we're 1-0 down, but we can still be in control of the game. But the referee has got the decision totally wrong in my opinion.
"That is the key moment in the game because we go 2-0 down and down to 10 men.
"We lost another stupid goal to a ricochet, couldn't do much about and it was that sort of day.
"In the second half we didn't work hard enough. When you go down to 10 you need to defend as solidly as I would have liked.
"But circumstances, apart from the first goal, were totally out of our hands."
