Glenn: Decision hurt us

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Glenn Hoddle was left to rue the debated free-kick that cost us in last night's Worthington Cup semi-final first leg at Chelsea.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink appeared to handle the ball in a challenge with Ledley King after 75 minutes but referee Alan Wiley gave the free-kick in the home side's favour.

Hasselbaink duly smashed a 30-yarder into the top corner to hand Chelsea a 2-1 lead going into the second leg at the Lane on January 23.

It was somewhat harsh after we'd enjoyed long spells of possession and got back on level terms through Les Ferdinand but, ironically, it could have been worse - Mr Wiley chose not to award a penalty when it looked like Kasey Keller had pulled down Mikael Forsell in the box late on.

A disappointed Glenn reflected: "That free-kick was a decision that really hurt us. It was a key decision.

"For me it's a simple decision they should get right but I've got to say I thought there was a possibility there could have been a penalty against us as well. That was a tougher decision.

"But the free-kick was a simple decision that most people in the stadium would have seen. Unfortunately the referee didn't and it went against us."

Glenn said he was pleased with how we played after Hasselbaink opened the scoring early on - the Dutch striker has now scored seven goals against us for Chelsea in four games - and believes the tie is wide open.

He added: "I felt we were in control for lots of spells in the first half, got ourselves back in the game and there is everything to play for.

"If we'd have come here and got a draw it wouldn't have been much different. We still have to win 1-0. We've got to get a goal and if it ends up 1-0 after extra time we'll go through."
