Giovani dos Santos came close to marking the start of the World Cup with a goal as Mexico drew with hosts South Africa in the opening match of the tournament.

The winger looked lively as Mexico dominated the opening half-hour of the huge occasion at Soccer City, Johannesburg.

Indeed, Gio, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Galatasaray, might have opened the scoring inside two minutes but was denied by a goal-saving tackle from Aaron Mokoena.

Gio lashed a 25-yarder just wide after 19 minutes and was denied again by a last-ditch tackle after 39 minutes, this time Bongalis Khumano deflecting his shot wide.

Willed on by their incredible home support, South Africa took the lead with a stunning opener from Siphiwe Tshabalala after 55 minutes.

Gio's best effort followed soon after when he beat two defenders in the box before taking aim for the top corner - Bafana Bafana keeper Itumeleng Khune turned it over.

Mexico finally levelled when Rafa Marquez fired home from close range in the 79th minute and it stayed 1-1.
