GG not envious of money-pool
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham insists he is not envious of Gerard Houllier’s apparent open cheque-book at Liverpool.
Houllier has spent over £40m in the last two seasons on the likes of Emile Heskey (£11m), Dietmar Hamann (£8m) and ex-Spur Nicky Barmby (£6m) in a bid to capture former glories at Anfield.
It seems to be working. Liverpool are currently third in the Premiership and making a decent fight of trying to keep up with Manchester United and Arsenal.
But Lane boss George — who spent £16m himself on Sergei Rebrov and Ben Thatcher in the summer — declared: “I’m not envious of that sort of money.”
He added: “If you at my track record nearly every club I’ve been at I’ve always spent sensibly and I’ve always left clubs in very, very good condition. My philosophy has not done too bad but it’s always nice to have an open cheque-book.”
George praised Houllier — an ‘excellent’ manager — and said Liverpool were ‘doing as well as they can at the present time’.
“They realise that if they had slipped any more they would have slipped out of sight,” said George. “They’ve arrested that.
“They have bought a lot of players in the last 18 months, spent a lot of money and they are challenging and good luck to them. They have an excellent manager and he realises it’s not going to be done quickly as well.”
