George's law of averages

English Barclays Premiership

George Graham is aiming to build on what he describes as an 'average' start to our Premiership campaign.

Saturday's disappointing performance and defeat at Newcastle certainly took the shine off what was a promising first two games with victory over Ipswich on the opening day and a creditable draw at Middlesbrough last week.

In a reflective mood at Spurs Lodge - with half of his first-team regulars away on international duty - the boss admitted: "It's been an average start. Winning at home was a great bonus and a boost for everybody at the club then another good performance at Middlesbrough where, again, we could have got the three points but then a disappointing display at Newcastle.

"I quite fancied our chances before that match. We were confident without being over-confident but in the Premiership it is very difficult when you give teams a head start. We played offside and according to the video replays, both the goals were offside, but I thought 10 minutues into the game trying to play offside was a little risky.

"If we look at it from a positive point of view we got nothing from four matches in the north-east last season but at least we managed a draw at Middlesbrough. That's at least an improvement.

"I would say that overall the first week of the season has been average, won one, drawn one, lost one, but half of the teams have played two games at home and one away and the other half have played two away. We've a couple of home matches coming up so things could soon alter again."
