George's Doc dilemma
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham insists the best is yet to come from Gary Doherty — in what ever position he eventually settles down in!
The debate still rages on as to whether Doherty is a defender or forward. The Irish international has certainly stated his preference for defensive duties but has excelled up front in recent emergencies at Charlton - where he helped turn a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 win - and Manchester City.
Boss George would seem to have a dilemma on his hands for Saturday’s crucial FA Cup tie against Stockport County.
Chris Perry will miss the game through injury, so Doherty seems the natural choice to move back into defence but at the same time, Andy Booth is cup-tied and Les Ferdinand and Steffen Iversen only have 20 minutes of reserve team football under their belts.
George said: "We’ll have to see about his best position. He’s done ever so well at the back as part of a central three but was also outstanding up front at Charlton. Last week at City he played the first half up front and with Chris Perry’s injury moved back to centre-half at half-time
"It is quite rare for a player to play in both positions. It takes all-round ability and the boy has that ability but he’s still learning and is still not the finished article in both positions.
"He is only 20. To me he can play both but we’ll have to find out what he's most comfortable in and what suits the team most as well.
"Gary’s got his opportunity through injuries and he’s probably made a bigger impact. He’s done really, really well. He’s a good lad and good to work with. There is always room for improvement and all those young boys are willing to learn and their attitudes are first class."
