George's cup secrets
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham has revealed the secret to guiding teams through the minefield of the FA Cup — basically, there isn’t one!
George has rarely been tripped up by lower or non-league sides in his managerial career — apart from Arsenal’s demise against Wrexham in 1992.
He now faces another challenge when we travel to Leyton Orient in the third round on Saturday.
The O’s are unbeaten in 15 home games this season — including a League Cup draw against Newcastle United — while we have yet to win away. Include what is expected to be a tricky playing surface and the magic of the FA Cup and all the ingredients are there for an upset.
So what was the secret of avoiding these banana skins? “There is no great secret,” said George.
“The way we approach these games is by doing our homework, we’ve got to give them the respect we give every club and don’t treat them too lightly.
“So we do our homework, we look at strengths and weaknesses and we know if we can match their desire, work-rate and approach and then you hope the skill and technique aspects will take care of themselves.”
George knows we are in for a tough time at Brisbane Road. “We’ve had them watched and watched them on video, they have a fantastic home record and they are going to be a difficult side to beat on their ground,” he said.
“But there is no reason why we can’t go there with optimism. I know our away record is one of the worst in the Premiership but we have to roll our sleeves up and try to produce the form we’ve produced at home.”
