George: Tel's major influence
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham prepares to welcome his friend Terry Venables back to White Hart Lane with this admission: “He’s been a major influence.”
Former Spurs boss Venables returns to N17 on Saturday just three matches into his latest managerial position at Middlesbrough.
The pair go back a long way and it was Venables who handed George his first coaching role at Crystal Palace back in 1977. He was also coaching under El Tel at QPR before kicking-off his own rise to the top at Millwall in the early-1980s.
George said: “I personally think it will be nice to welcome Terry back not only as a friend but someone who introduced me into the managerial and coaching side of the game. He’s been a major influence on my career.
“He made me youth team coach at Palace and then onto to QPR and I learned a lot from him. It will be nice to cross swords with him again.
“Terry has a fantastic pedigree, probably one of the best coaches in English football for the last 10 or 15 years.
“It’s going to be a tremendous challenge and I think the biggest thing of the day will probably be Terry’s return to the club where he’s had a big influence as a player, coach and manager.”
Venables took the reins on Teeside with Boro fighting against relegation. There were positive signs in his first match in charge at Sunderland, a defeat, before beating Chelsea at the Riverside last week.
It will be his first time back at the Lane as an opposing manager since leaving the club in 1993.
