George praise for O'Leary

English Barclays Premiership

George Graham travels back to Elland Road admitting: “David O’Leary deserves all the credit for this Leeds team.”

George was in charge of Leeds for two years before arriving at White Hart Lane in September 1998. Many believe he laid the foundations that O’Leary has benefited from but he insists the current boss has taken the Yorkshire club to another level.

“I went into Leeds and they were in bit of a mess, the mess needed sorting out and that’s what I did,” said George. “There were players coming in and players going out and I probably started it off and now David O’Leary has taken it to another level.

“All the credit for the present team is down to him. If they hadn’t have been successful he would have been taking the blame.

“So if he’s going to take the blame when they don’t do well it’s only right that he should take the credit when they do well.

“I think he’s handled the job very well. I used to leave him with the team for days at a time and he’s handled it superbly. It’s not really surprised me.

“He will have his ups and downs but with the squad he has now it will be more ups, without question. He’s got a young, exciting team there just now and probably only a few players short of being an excellent squad.

“If they can field their best team on a regular basis they will give anyone a run for the championship.”
