George on George
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham has praised Ipswich Town manager George Burley for sticking to his footballing principles in the Premiership.
Promoted in the play-offs last season, Town have taken the top flight by storm and we travel to Portman Road with the Suffolk outfit sitting proudly in fifth place.
George said: “They’ve been the surprise package, without doubt. Having just gained promotion they’ve done ever so well and that’s without bringing in any new players.
“I always give the manager great praise because he’s not changed the philosophy because he’s come into the Premiership. I think it’s the away victories that have really impressed everybody at places like Liverpool, that’s fantastic.”
What George would for a slice of Town’s away-day fortune. Defeat at Southampton on Wednesday extended our run of away games without a win to 10 matches and you have to go back to April for the last victory on our travels.
Nevertheless, we have played well away from home on occasions and were certainly a match for Saints in the first half before two goals in 90 seconds totally changed the contest.
George reflected: “We’ve got to learn that possession doesn’t mean we are going to win games. I would say that in the majority of away games we’ve played this year we’ve had the majority of possession, apart from Manchester United and Newcastle, but we’ve got to have more of a punch in the attacking third.
“We’ve got to have an end product to our build-up play. You see teams like Southampton who played very simple football and sometimes simplicity is genius. They played off the centre-forward the majority of the time and it worked for them.”
That maybe an indication that Gary Doherty, who came on for Sergei Rebrov after an hour at The Dell, could find himself a starting role as a target man on Saturday.
