George: I dont want to lose Ian
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
George Graham has declared: “I still don’t want to lose Ian Walker.”
Walker handed in a transfer request after losing his number one spot to summer arrival Neil Sullivan at the start of the season.
Ironically, just days after that request was accepted by the club, Scottish international Sullivan was sent off in a Worthington Cup tie at Brentford.
With Sullivan suspended for one game Walker will now get his chance in Saturday’s Premiership clash at Coventry City.
Manager George Graham has insisted all along that he wanted Walker to fight for his place and hasn’t changed his tune.
George confirmed: “I want a big squad of players and I would have thought and would have liked Ian to have accepted the challenge of having two good goalkeepers as well as that squad of outfield players.
“I’ve not got the good squad of outfield players that I would like yet but I think I have two outstanding goalkeepers.
“Sadly Ian asked for a transfer and it was granted. I didn’t want to lose him, I still don’t want to lose him but sadly it’s his decision.
“Now he’s got an opportunity to come into the team and perform the way he can.”
Walker’s return also leaves a place for a substitute goalkeeper on the bench — expect Hans Segers, 39 later this month, to fill that role. Our goalkeeping coach last played competitively in a Worthington Cup tie against Brentford in September 1998.
George added: “Hans is a great character and has a fantastic love of the game. What a fantastic competitor. It would be nice to have him along with the party.”
