George Graham described Wednesday night’s draw at West Ham as a ‘professional performance’.
Another gritty defensive display was certainly that but we also created our fair share of chances in an entertaining game.
Loanee debutant Andy Booth had the ball in the net in the 15th minute, a bullet header from Darren Anderton’s cross, and Oyvind Leonhardsen must still be wondering how Hannu Tihinen scooped his toe poke past Shaka Hislop off the line.
In the end a point and fourth successive clean sheet was a job well done.
George said: “I thought we played well in the first 30 minutes and then West Ham had a good finish to the first half and good start to the second half. Once we weathered that storm I thought we finished well.
“We played some nice football, got some crosses in and Leonhardsen was unlucky not to score.
“But for an away performance it was solid, especially with West Ham being on a high and having lots of confidence after Sunday.”
Defensively, we seemed to have been stung into action since the disaster at Ipswich Town on December 30.
Since then we’ve let in two goals in five matches — both in the 4-2 win against Newcastle, one a penalty — and our central defensive three of Gary Doherty, Chris Perry and Sol Campbell are starting to gel.
George added: “The players did well and I was very pleased with them. It was a clean sheet, a bit of fortune here and there but we’re playing against two class forwards and to limit them to the few chances they had we did well.”
As for Booth, George enthused: “I thought he did very well. Held the ball up, won 90 per cent of his headers. I thought he did well and the team did well.”
Listen to George's post-match press conference in full by clicking here

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
