George disputes late goal

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Spurs and Arsenal had more in common than a share of the points after Monday night’s 1-1 draw at the Lane — both George Graham and Arsene Wenger were unhappy with their opponents’ respective strikes.

Wenger claimed that Les Ferdinand was in an offside position for Sergei Rebrov’s goal, while George complained that Patrick Vieira manhandled Ferdinand as the Frenchman headed the late leveller.

"I think that losing it in the last couple of minutes is sad," lamented George. "Especially as it’s so obvious on television — how he (the referee) can give that goal I just don’t understand.

"It was unbelievable, the foul on Les Ferdinand. It really is. He wasn’t pushed, he had his shirt pulled nearly off his back so he (Vieira) had a free header while Ferdinand was almost on the ground. I’ve seen it a couple of times. How the goal stood I can’t believe."

George did not approach the referee after the game, saying that there was ‘no point’, but repeated that allowing the goal was unbelievable.

A philosophical Wenger said: "You are never happy when goals like that are given against you. Ferdinand was offside earlier on and was interfering with play."

Asked if Arsenal’s offside trap broke down, George quipped: "I don’t think you should play the offside if you can’t do it properly…"
