Gazza pays tribute

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Paul Gascoigne played through the pain barrier in Thursday night's tribute match against DC United because he insisted he was not going to miss a return to the Lane for anything.

Gazza lined-up in a dream midfield alongside David Ginola, Steffen Freund and Gus Poyet, milked an adoring reception from Spurs fans and managed to last 50 minutes.

He revealed afterwards that he was labouring due to a groin and thigh injury he picked up in the European Masters on Sunday, but was never going to miss out on pulling the white shirt on again. "I really enjoyed it," purred Gazza afterwards.

"It's just a shame, I hadn't kicked a ball for a couple of months and then I played 90 minutes last week and then the European Masters. In the Masters I did my groin a little bit and my thigh.

"But I didn't want to miss this for anything so I managed to get through the first 45 and was in quite a bit of pain with it. I didn't want to make it much worse so it was best I came off just after half-time.

"It's great to be back."

Gazza was genuinely touched by the reception he received from the crowd and explains that the special relationship he enjoys with fans is down to the fact that he is 'one of them'.

"It's brilliant, unbelievable - I wish I could play for them. I really enjoyed it, the feeling I got coming on and off the pitch was fabulous.

"It's because I'm one of them. I'm not a big head - I'm nobody different. I always had special moments at Tottenham - especially in the FA Cup.

"The fans at Tottenham have always been fantastic and to myself they have always been more than fantastic."

Gazza describes his spell at the club as a period of time when everything came together for him, but picks out the semi-final against Arsenal as his favourite moment.

"The semi-final stands out, but every time I played for them really because it was a time in my career when everything came together. I got into the England team and it was one of the best times in my life."
