Gary: I haven't done enough

English Barclays Premiership

Gary Doherty prepares to pull on the green of Ireland on Friday admitting: “I haven’t done enough at Spurs.”

The versatile youngster who can play either centre-forward or centre-back is likely to take a striker’s role if selected for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s match against Portugal.

It was that role he filled albeit briefly in his first and only Premiership appearance so far this season as a substitute against Manchester City.

That gave Doherty another taste of what he first sampled last season — first-team action — but although he admits he’d love to be out there again soon he honestly believes he hasn’t done enough to deserve it.

He admitted: “It was great to be back out there again against Manchester City and I really enjoyed it.

“You want to be out there but you’ve got to deserve it and I don’t think I’ve deserved it. I’ve got to start playing better for the reserves and training better.

“You’ve got to be honest with yourself. I think it’s been going alright but I’ve really got to start pushing on now and pushing people for places. That is what my main aim is and I’ve got start doing that now.”

Injuries allowed Doherty to get back in first-team plans but with Ledley King, Luke Young and Alton Thelwell all in the frame, he faces a fight to get back.

“You either get chances through lack of form or injuries and this time it was injuries,” he added. “I think I’ll be looking in the foreseeable future to get back on the bench again.”
