Gareth's graft unrewarded

Gareth Bale gave everything for Wales at Wembley - but couldn't prevent England taking another big step towards the Euro 2012 finals.

Gareth Bale gave everything for Wales at Wembley on Tuesday night - but couldn't prevent England taking another big step towards the Euro 2012 finals.

The flying winger was the only Spurs player to start the international derby with Scott Parker and Jermain Defoe both on the England bench.

Gareth looked to carry the game to the Three Lions at every opportunity and had a fascinating battle against Ashley Cole and James Milner all night down the right-hand side.

Scott entered the fray for Frank Lampard in the 73rd minute to help England protect a slender 1-0 lead - Ashley Young on target in the 35th minute - as Wales dominated the latter stages.

But just after Scott's arrival Wales carved out the chance of the night as Robert Earnshaw somehow fired over from six yards.

England held on for a crucial win in Group G. Fabio Capello's men are now six points clear of Montenegro with one game remaining. Montenegro have a game in hand, but if England take a point when the teams meet in Podgorica on October 7, they will book a place as group winners in next summer's co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
