Gareth shines in NY!

It might have cost him a black eye, but Gareth Bale was delighted to grab the winner against New York Red Bulls on Thursday night.

It might have cost him a black eye, but Gareth Bale was delighted to grab the winner against New York Red Bulls on Thursday night.

The flying full-back was there to pounce when Red Bulls' defender Jeremy Hall misjudged his header home to goalkeeper Greg Sutton from Tom Huddlestone's pass in the 72nd minute.

Gareth nipped in front of Sutton to prod home from close range and secure a 2-1 win in our opening match of the Barclays New York Challenge.

However, he was caught by the keeper's studs at the same time, leaving him with a slight cut above the left eye and a shiner on Friday morning!

"The keeper came flying out!" smiled Gareth afterwards at the Red Bull Arena. "It's cost me a black eye but it's always worth it to score.

"We all knew they would come out strong. Henry was always going to make his debut against us and they are mid-way through the MLS season, so they are at peak fitness.

"That made it a tough match for us and it was a good workout, which is most important in pre-season.

"Having said that, of course we want to go out and win and that's the same for every game, but in pre-season the hard work side of it is just as important and making sure we all get something out the matches.

"I think we all did that and if the result goes the right way as well, then that's ideal."
