Gardner none the wiser

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Anthony Gardner admits that he is still confused by the penalty decision that cost us the points at Birmingham and insists that maximum reward is the aim against Leeds United in our home opener on Saturday.

It was a tangle with Robbie Savage that led to the spot-kick award last weekend, when it, certainly initially, appeared that the Welsh international was the one infringing on Anthony.

Speaking back at Spurs Lodge, the leggy defender says the decision became no clearer the more times he watched the incident.

"I've had plenty enough time to reflect on it," he reasoned. "I wasn't sure at the time what actually happened, I know I had the ball and he was trying to get to it, but didn't know where the foul was meant to have been.

"I've seen it again and again and am more confused than I was at the time.

"It cost us a penalty though, and a goal - no matter how many times you see it, it is not going to make any difference. They got the three points and there is not much else you can say.

"We've just got to remember it and learn from it, I suppose. Hopefully next time, if anything like that happens, it will be in our favour."

Anthony added that it was not in the script to be heading back to the Lane with no points in the bank and is determined to help put that right against Leeds United.

"Definitely, coming into the first home game we would have liked to have had three points in the bag - or at least one. As it is, we haven't, and will be endeavouring to put three points on the board against Leeds".

To do so, Anthony and his defensive colleagues will have to shackle the combined threat of Alan Smith and Mark Viduka. For all the high-profile departures from Elland Road, the pair remain a dangerous constant.

"They are a handful together and can cause problems. They are a different type of challenge to Dugarry and Horsfield.

"Viduka is one of the best strikers in Europe because he has all these different attributes that make it difficult for defenders. We have to be up for it."

Leeds may have surprised a few fans and pundits with their day one point against Newcastle United, but Anthony concluded by saying people should not have taken too much notice of Leeds' dire pre-season results and imagined that they would roll-over in front of their fancied opponents.

"I was not really surprised because I know what they can do and when they get it right up front they can score goals.

"I think people might have looked at Leeds' pre-season form and thought they wouldn't get a result, but we know it doesn't count until you start the season."
