Fulham U18s 5-3 Spurs - John's verdict

John McDermott lamented “a bad day at the office” for our Under-18s after Saturday’s 5-3 defeat at Fulham in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.
The Cottagers found time and space on the ball in the first period at Motspur Park and were 4-1 up by the half-time interval.
We mustered a response in the last half-an-hour and began to make inroads into the home side’s defence but John, our Head of Player Development, felt it was too little, too late by that stage and underlined the need for the players to remain focused from the first whistle to the last.
“Sadly for 60 or 65 minutes it was one-way traffic and an incredibly disappointing performance,” he said.
“I thought Fulham were very good. Whenever you play against a Steve Wigley side you know they’re going to be incredibly competitive, forward-thinking and difficult to beat.
“There was, to some degree, an element of respectability about our efforts towards the end of the game, but in terms of trying to develop potential professional footballers, today was a bad day at the office because of how we played.
“Maybe there were a few players who had one eye on going away on international duty over the next week as opposed to focusing on the job in hand. It’s imperative that the boys remain fully focused whenever they’re on the pitch.”
