FRUSTRATION GAME FOR GUS

Gus Poyet praised the lads for their second half comeback at Villa but, like Juande Ramos, couldn't hide his disappointment at the manner of our 2-1 defeat.

Gus Poyet praised the lads for their second half comeback at Villa but, like Juande Ramos, couldn't hide his disappointment at the manner of our 2-1 defeat.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Juande switched systems from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2, introducing Tom Huddlestone at half-time and then Jamie O'Hara and Robbie Keane before the hour mark.

It worked a treat as we gained more and more possession and when our chance to equalise came along with 11 minutes left, Jermain Defoe gleefully volleyed home.

That goal looked like it might be the catalyst for a possible win but we were rocked six minutes later when Martin Laursen rose unchallenged to head home from Gareth Barry's corner, Villa's second set-piece goal.

"Sometimes you can lose a game because the opposition is better and score a fantastic goal but when it's from a set-piece it's difficult to take, especially after our performance in the second half," reflected Gus.

"We gave away too many free-kicks around the box, so we put ourselves under pressure and then didn't defend it properly, so it's too many things.

"We came back in the second half and showed everyone watching on television how we can play.

"We changed the system and the players adapted fantastically. We started passing the ball and controlled the second half, we were on top, created oppportunities and got ourselves back in the game but then gave away the second goal. That was very difficult to take."
