Frustrating end to a good season

Michael Dawson is happy with the contribution he made during the 2008-09 season - even though injury prevented him seeing out the campaign.

The defender landed awkwardly on his ankle during our win over Newcastle at The Lane in April, thus ending his season prematurely.

It was especially frustrating for ‘Daws', whose game time during the latter stages of the campaign had been limited anyway due to the form of regular defensive pairing Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate.

But he chose to remain positive, saying: "Missing the last five games of the season wasn't nice.

"It's boring being injured - even though you probably end up working harder than when you're fit!

"But it was a frustrating time. I hadn't played for a while but then got the chance against Newcastle and did my ankle.

"But I'm not going to dwell on it and I'm not the type of person to get myself down about things, especially when the team has done so well."

And Michael is pleased with the way he has applied himself when called upon during his 28 appearances this season.

It's a contribution that has been recognised by many, including the fans, as he picked up the Team Player of the Year gong at the recent Supporters Clubs Awards.

"I want to play football, and when you've got two top players like Ledley and Woody in front of you, it's going to be hard," Daws added.

"But I've played lots of games this season, and whenever I've played, I've always felt to myself that I've done well.

"That's all I could do when I was playing - keep giving the manager a selection headache! All I'll ever keep doing is working hard."
