Freund: Sergei's the man

English Barclays Premiership

As Sergei Rebrov returns to the Ukraine for the first time since his summer arrival, his 'minder' Steffen Freund has revealed: "All he wants to do is score for Tottenham."

The £11m man has travelled home for Ukraine's first World Cup qualifying match against Poland in the Dynamo Stadium, Kiev, on Saturday.

Our German midfielder has kept a close eye on Rebrov as he's come to terms with life in England. After all, Freund knows better than most what Rebrov is going through having arrived from a different culture himself after his move from Borussia Dortmund back in January 1999.

Talking after training at Spurs Lodge after being ignored again by Germany this week, Euro96 winner Freund said: "It is getting better all the time for Sergei. He has a good character and he likes to play for Tottenham. I know this because we roomed together when we went away and we spoke about it every night.

"He always has an English book to hand for his grammar, he learns every day and it is much better every day. It is not a problem for him to go to the Ukraine for one week. He loves to play for them and we have to understand that. He wants to learn English, he has settled well and all he wants to do now is score for Tottenham."

Freund, capped 16 times, also knows all about international weeks and what it takes out of players on duty. "If you play away for your country it tends to be a long way away and that makes it hard work," he said.

"For this week, everybody comes back on Sunday and it is right what the boss says, everyone has to come to the ground, have a massage and relax because we play on Tuesday and this is very, hard and a very short break for the international boys. I just hope everyone comes back injury-free and we have a strong squad for Everton on Tuesday. For me, that is the next important game."
