Foundation success at Haringey awards
Benoit Assou-Ekotto was a special guest at this year’s Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards held at Alexandra Palace.
The left-back presented the awards alongside Haringey’s Mayor, Cllr David Browne, recognising the Borough’s best grassroots sports people, clubs, and organisations.
The event was sponsored by the Club and turned out to be a successful evening for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.
White Hart Lane Tennis Club, the key hub site of the Foundation’s successful tennis programme, picked up Sports Club of the Year.
And the Spurs Ladies first team, who finished sixth in their inaugral season playing at Premier League South level and lifted the London Cup for the first time, won the Women’s Team of the Year award.
A Tottenham Hotspur first team player attends the awards every year, with previous guests including Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Roman Pavlyuchenko.
Benoit was the latest to make an appearance, and said: “It is important for me and the other players to show local people that you can make something of yourself through sport.
“Maybe the young people who I have met will see me and think ‘if he can do it, then maybe I can make it as well'. That’s why it’s important to reach out to the community.
“However, it’s also just as important to focus on education as well as sport, as I have been very lucky to get to where I am today.”
