FORWARD THINKING

Jermain Defoe has no doubts that his friend and fellow striker Darren Bent will bag plenty of goals this season.

Jermain Defoe has no doubts that his friend and fellow striker Darren Bent will bag plenty of goals this season.‘Benty’ notched his second goal in as many Premier League games with a fine strike to complete the scoring in Sunday’s 4-0 win against Wigan.

That took his tally to four in all competitions this term and the quality of the goals suggest an upturn in confidence – a 20-yarder into the bottom corner at Middlesbrough before Sunday’s drive across Chris Kirkland and in off the post against Wigan.

“We are always going to score goals with strikers we’ve got. Berba is capable of scoring goals out of nothing, Keano’s on fire, I’ve got a few and Benty showed what he can do against Middlesbrough and Wigan,” said Jermain, who revealed that his striker partner that day at the Riverside will have taken a lot of confidence from his recent goals.

“Benty is the type of forward who is a natural goalscorer. He’s looked so sharp in training and his finishing has been unbelievable. He will always score goals, his movement is superb, very clever and his confidence has been boosted by those goals. I’m sure he will kick on from that and will score a lot of goals for this club.”
