Former world boxing champ inspires youngsters to aim high

05 June 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

The gloves were off for Glenn McCrory earlier this week when the former boxing world champion delivered an inspirational workshop to young people from the local community on behalf of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation at White Hart Lane.

Participants from Foundation’s boxing programme and students from Tottenham UTC were amongst the young people invited to attend Glenn’s talk which focused on the topic of education and careers.

The workshop was organised as part of the Foundation’s extensive education and employment programmes which have to date delivered over 600 job opportunities to local people through jobs fairs, apprenticeships and partner initiatives.

During the talk, Glenn, who is now a boxing pundit on Sky Sports, used his own experiences to emphasise the importance of securing employment, working hard and building a successful career. He also spoke about how sport can help to build self-confidence, motivation and be a great way to network for future opportunities - from hearing about different courses available to study, to job vacancies.

Glenn said: “Sport can open many doors - I started out as a boxer which led me to a career in the media as well as working to help young unemployed people across the country.

“Spending time here at White Hart Lane, I’ve seen the extensive network of support you have at your fingertips to help you make that first step on the career ladder, so make sure you make the most of all of the opportunities that come your way.

“And remember, don’t let anyone tell you can’t achieve your dreams because you can.”

The Foundation runs an extensive range of programmes that use sport as a hook to engage young people into education and employment, including its Premier League 4 Sport boxing sessions which in the last two years have engaged 94 people from Haringey alone.

The Foundation’s next jobs fair will take place at White Hart Lane on Wednesday 10th June, 10am-4pm. For more information please contact
