Fixture flashback - United for starters

17 June 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

The 2015-16 season will see us face Manchester United in our first league outing for only the third time.

The first time we faced the Red Devils on the opening day of a season was back in 1997-98, when two late goals saw United run out 2-0 winners at White Hart Lane on August 10, 1997.

Teddy Sheringham made his Manchester United debut that afternoon, having swapped the Lane for Old Trafford a couple of months earlier, but he missed a penalty after Justin Edinburgh was penalised for handball – his effort striking the woodwork.

David Ginola, Stephen Clemence and Les Ferdinand all marked their Spurs debuts, meanwhile, the latter testing United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, while Ramon Vega and Allan Nielsen also went close.

However, two goals in a minute – a Nicky Butt effort followed by a Vega own goal – in the closing stages saw United take the points.

Back in 2011-12, we ended up facing Manchester United first on the domestic scene after our scheduled opening day clash with Everton at the Lane was postponed due to civil unrest in the area.

Consequently, we started our league campaign a week late, with second half goals from Danny Welbeck, Anderson and Wayne Rooney giving Sir Alex Ferguson’s side a 3-0 win at Old Trafford on August 22, 2011. Brad Friedel made his debut between the sticks for us.

Our first run-out of that campaign had come four days earlier, as we thrashed Scottish side Heart of Midlothian 5-0 in the away leg of our Europa League play-off round tie.

The provisional fixture list for the forthcoming 2015-16 Premier League season has handed us a trip to Old Trafford on the opening day, the match currently scheduled for Saturday, August 8. All fixtures for the new season are subject to change – find full details here...
