Our Under-18s kicked-off 2008 in style with a 5-0 win against Cardiff City.

Our Under-18s kicked-off 2008 in style with a 5-0 win against Cardiff City.It was the ideal preparation for Tuesday night's FA Youth Cup fourh round tie against Chester City at the Lane.

Jon Obika and Ryan Mason scored two goals each and Alex Olsen was also on target as the lads stretched their run in the FA Premier Academy League to seven games unbeaten and one loss in 10. In fact, they've won five games on the trot including the FA Youth Cup victory at Southampton.

Patience was the name of the game on Saturday, as coach Alex Inglethorpe reported.

"In all honesty we huffed and puffed for the first half-hour," he said. "Cardiff had a very solid defensive strategy and credit to them, they thought it out and executed it well.

"We had a lot of the ball but didn't create too much, we didn't solve the problem quickly but we got there in the end.

"We opened the scoring on the half-hour when Jon Obika headed home at the far post and we soon went 2-0 up when Kyle Fraser-Allen pressed the play, won the ball and sent Alex Olsen away and he lifted the ball over the keeper as he came out.

"The second half was better, we kept the ball and found our rhythm.

"Ryan Mason made it 3-0 after 55 minutes when he was first to the rebound after a shot was saved and he then converted a penalty for 4-0 after Kyle Fraser-Allen was fouled.

"The fifth goal was with about 20 minutes left and good work down the left, Ryan Mason crossed for Jon Obika who controlled it and volleyed home.

"I thought the team showed maturity, we didn't panic, passed and probed away and eventually got our rewards."
