FITC on tour

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Director of Community Development Kathryn Robinson explained the objectives behind herself and members of the Club's FITC team playing their part on the trip to South Korea.

Kathryn, area co-ordinators Mark Jones and Andy Rodgers, along with freestyler Billy Wingrove have proved extremely popular with their coaching sessions for local school children. They also made a visit to an orphanage for coaching and to distribute gifts for the youngsters.

"I think it is really important when we come on a trip like this that the local people don't think we just come in with the first team to play in big games and don't care about what is happening on the ground," reasoned Kathryn.

"Part and parcel of what the Community team is trying to do is give something back and culturally in South Korea this is really important. It has gone down really well and people have been ecstatic with what we've been able to do.

"In addition to this, from the club's perspective, we would like to build a supporter-base out here. Every child we have seen has gone away with a gift from Tottenham Hotspur - be it a mini ball, a wrist band or boot bag - something that will make a connection between them and the club.

"With the way the internet works now, we hope people will be really drawn in and will have access to us and take an interest even though they live on the other side of the world."

Kathryn has also worked at the Premier League and pointed out that the transfer of a community project overseas is a very original concept.

"It is really innovative and I think it is absolutely vital going forward that we do it. If the remit of of the Community scheme is to create the next generation of supporters of Tottenham Hotspur we shouldn't be limiting ourselves, we must be broader and this is one way of going about that."

The ace in our community pack is undoubtedly the stunning skills of freestyler Billy - another first for an English football club - who has captivated his audience wherever he has been.

"He is the joker in the pack!" added Kathryn. "Billy gives us two or three different things, he is completely unique as we are the only club who employs a freestyler. Whenever we are doing community events we can go out there and have something different and he will always draw people towards the other activities that we do.

"In addition to all this he is a great coach, so he is not just somebody who is a one-trick pony and will go out and do a few tricks, he can take children aside and teach them to do what he does. It is a good way of us having unusual courses.

"One of things about this club is we have always said we will try and be first, try and be innovative and try and be different. We are the first club to sign a freestyler and having somebody of Billy's quality proves that."
