First goal important, says Hugo

19 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris praised the perseverance of our outfield players after we returned to winning ways against Hull City on Saturday.

Back-to-back losses against Manchester City and Stoke City meant we went into the penultimate game of the season against the Tigers without any momentum and determined to get back on track.

Hull’s Nikica Jelavic tried his best to add to that recent barren spell as he twice went close to putting Steve Bruce’s men ahead in the first half at White Hart Lane – hitting the woodwork from a tight angle and just missing the target with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

But goalkeeper Hugo, wearing the captain’s armband as usual, watched Nacer Chadli and Danny Rose secure a 2-0 victory in the second half and insisted it was a job well done as we prepare for Sunday’s trip to Everton.

“Until you score the first goal it’s always difficult in the Premier League but we stayed in control and I think we managed the game as we wanted,” said the French international.

“We were in a difficult situation because we’d lost a couple of games beforehand but, from the beginning of the match, we tried to play forward with confidence.

“We were strong defensively and in the middle of the pitch and there were times when we needed more concentration and precision in front of goal but, when you try and try and try to score, you know you’re likely to break through so that’s a good thing heading into the last game at Everton.”
