Fingers crossed for Christian

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Christian Ziege declared his full fitness after a 90-minute stint for the reserves on Monday night - you could forgive him if he decided to hide away until the weekend.

The words 'lucky' and 'Christian Ziege' haven't been seen together in a sentence for some time so there will be a few fingers crossed if, as he now hopes, he returns to the first-team squad for Saturday's Premiership trip to Fulham.

To sum up, the German star has played just 105 minutes of competitive first-team football since a career-threatening thigh injury on Boxing Day 2002.

He suffered complications with that injury during pre-season and then needed knee surgery after limping out of his comeback match against West Ham in September.

His latest comeback for the reserves a fortnight ago was cut short, literally, by a nasty gash across his eye that required five stitches.

But there were no problems as he completed 90 minutes for the second string in Monday's 2-0 win against Portsmouth.

"I had no problems at all," said Christian afterwards. "I'm fit, I needed another game and I completed the 90 minutes and now I'm looking forward to trying to get back into the first team.

"When I had the clash and the cut I was already feeling fine. It was only because the stitches above my eye that I wasn't able to play last week.

"Things happen in football and I've seen too much in the last year. I feel fine and now fingers crossed it will go well.

"Perhaps I should stay inside for the rest of the week but a tree might fall on the house!

"It would be great to run out again with the first team. I watched the African Nations Cup, the FA Cup, big competitions and that's when you miss it. You want to be there. I'm looking forward to getting back."
