Final a 'positive experience' - Hugo

02 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris said our young squad can be proud of reaching the Capital One Cup Final and that the experience of a loss at Wembley will make the players all the more determined to return.

The goalkeeper who captained France at last summer's World Cup led the team out at Wembley and felt there were no regrets after the players gave everything in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea.

We had the better of the first half - Christian Eriksen struck the woodwork - before Chelsea opened the scoring in the 45th minute, the first of their two deflected goals through John Terry.

Diego Costa's shot rebounded off Kyle Walker to leave Hugo stranded 10 minutes into the second half to double Chelsea's lead and despite bags of heart and endeavour, we couldn't break down the Blues' defence this time.

"We are disappointed, that’s normal after losing a final," said Hugo. "But I think we can be proud because we played our football and showed a lot of character. After that, we missed a bit of luck, they scored two deflected goals but that’s part of football. It can make us better and stronger for the future.

"It was frustrating but we can’t have regrets after a game like this. We played our football and we had a lot of young players who had their first final experience and we can build on this game.

"In football, you cannot buy experience, you have to play that kind of game to grow. It was a positive experience. I hope we will have success in the future."

The team has little time to dwell on Wembley with a return to Premier League action against Swansea at the Lane on Wednesday night followed by another London derby at QPR on Saturday.

Asked about how the team would respond, Hugo said: "I’m not worried about that. After this game the fans know we tried our best and it was difficult against a strong team.

"Now we will be focused on the Premier League and try to finish as high as possible."
