FAYC: Barnsley 3-1 Spurs
Match report and guide to the action from Tuesday night's FA Youth Cup third round tie against Barnsley at Oakwell.
Our Under-18s fell at the first hurdle in this season's FA Youth Cup as Barnsley ran out 3-1 winners at Oakwell on Tuesday night.
The home side didn't look back after Danny Rose spectacularly volleyed them into the lead inside three minutes of this third round tie.
Barnsley scored a second in first half added time to put a dampener on what had been a spirited comeback and then all-but ended the contest with a third goal early in the second half.
Harry Kane pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 74th minute after Jack Barthram was tripped in the box, but it was too little, too late.
The key spell was arguably between Barnsley's first two goals.
Rose's scissor-kick into the top corner - a goal to grace any match - handed his side the perfect start but within a minute it could have been level as Kudus Oyenuga glanced a header wide.
Jordan Archer made a point-blank save soon after but the big chances then fell our way.
Oyenuga was denied by Tykes' goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius' one-on-one and the same player was denied again, this time a 25-yarder tipped over.
The lads were then dealt a huge blow as Ben Carlisle got to the left byline and cut the ball back for Jordan Clarke to drill into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
The clock read 45.12 and suddenly coach Alex Inglethorpe was having to address a 2-0 deficit at half-time.
The next goal was always going to be vital and it went Barnsley's way nine minutes into the second half. Carlisle whipped a free-kick into the near post and Bradley Riley darted in to flick home.
Realistically, there was no way back from there, but the lads refused to throw in the towel.
Lidakevicius turned away Callum Tapping's curler and Kane struck the woodwork before substitute Barthram was felled by Lidakevicius and Kane slotted home a consolation from the penalty spot.
