Fans can make difference - Andre
Andre Villas-Boas has underlined the importance of the fans at tonight’s Europa League clash against NK Maribor.
Victory over the Slovenian champions in Matchday Four is seen as key in a closely-fought Group J.
Indeed, Andre says the outcome ‘could be decisive’ in the group and if we’re successful, three points will lift us up to at least second place with two matches remaining.
Maribor impressed in a 1-1 draw in Matchday Three a fortnight ago at the Ljudski vrt Stadium and a narrow 1-0 loss at Lazio suggests that once again, they’ll be a tough nut to crack – and that’s where the fans can play their part.
“Positive emotion from the stands is very welcome,” said Andre.
“Our crowd has been amazing in their support for our players and they can make a difference when they are at their best, and that’s what we need.
“This team wants to get back to winning ways and we can only do it together.”
Lazio still top the group after both fixtures in Matchday Three ended in 1-1 draws. Maribor are second on four points, we’re third on three after three draws and Panathinaikos have two.
“It’s reached the stage now where matches start to define the group, we’ll have a real idea of what could happen after this fixture,” added Andre.
“Win, lose or draw, it doesn’t mean that mathematically we’ll be in or out, but a win can make a big difference. We will still have to do our job in Rome and against Panathinaikos.
“Maribor’s game at Lazio was very competitive and to be fair, they could have got a better result (they lost 1-0). They are a team with a winning mentality.
“We have to do our job. We hope to put on a good performance and try to get the three points.”
Tonight’s other Group J fixture sees Lazio host Panathinaikos in Rome.
