Familiar foe for Seb
Sebastien Bassong knows better than most defenders what to expect from the in-form Andy Carroll ahead of Newcastle's visit to the Lane.
Sebastien Bassong knows better than most defenders what to expect from the in-form Andy Carroll ahead of Newcastle’s visit to the Lane.
It will be the first time Seb has come up against his former club since arriving in N17 from St James’ Park in August 2009.
At that stage, Carroll was only just breaking into a Toon side that had just been relegated from the Premier League.
But the big frontman hasn’t looked back since – his goals led Newcastle to last season’s Championship title, he’s impressed during the first half of the current top flight campaign, and he even earned a first senior cap for England against France at Wembley last month.
Indeed, he was on target in the Toon's Boxing Day home defeat to City - his 11th goal of the Premier League campaign.
Seb said: "Newcastle have a lot of strength and they are good on set-pieces with players like Andy Carroll. He’s so strong, especially in the air and a real handful.
"He's impoved a lot. He needed someone to look after him and to make him improve. Chris Hughton did that. Now he’s flying.
"He's a dangerous player, he holds the ball up well, his link play is good and as I said, he’s so powerful in the air.
"We know all about him and we have to be strong with him."
