FA Cup 'special' - Harry

Harry Redknapp described the FA Cup as a 'special competition' before our opener against Charlton on Sunday.

Harry Redknapp described the FA Cup as a 'special competition' before our opener against Charlton on Sunday.

The competition has certainly been kind to the manager in recent seasons – he won it with Portsmouth in 2008 before reaching Wembley again in the semi-finals last season where we agonisingly missed out on a final place with defeat against Pompey.

We now get underway in 2011 with the Addicks making the trip across the Thames for a third round tie at the Lane, kick-off 1.30pm.

Charlton are currently fifth in League One and Harry acknowledges that with former Spurs Gary Doherty and Johnnie Jackson in the squad, the team from the Valley will be all out to cause an upset.

“For me, the FA Cup is a special competition and it would be great to have a run in it this year,” he said.

“We would all love nothing better than to reach a cup final if we can. I believe with this squad that we have a real chance too.

“There are some top players who haven't seen much action lately so I will certainly think about giving one or two of those lads the opportunity to be involved due to the number of fixtures we have faced of late.

“However, we know Charlton are a good side and it will be a tough game.

“They will come here full of effort and give it their all. The likes of Johnnie Jackson and Gary Doherty will certainly want to do well having previously played for the Club.

"It is a London derby so I am sure it will generate a great atmosphere."
