#ExtraordinarySpurs: Your Futures - Andrew's story

11 April 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is celebrating a decade of creating opportunities that change lives and today we bring you the latest in a series of features taking a look at some of the Club’s extraordinary yet often unseen work in its community.

Here we learn about young Spurs fan Andrew, 10, who ended up in A+E after an altercation at school before being referred to the Your Futures programme – a mentoring project in partnership with Whittington Hospital which engages young people who have experienced injury or trauma through violence.

Based at the Whittington Hospital’s Emergency Department, Your Futures sees a member of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation staff provide regular one-to-one mentoring for young people who are admitted to the hospital.

The subsequent mentoring Andrew received from Rakim at the Foundation resulted in improved behaviour and a series of awards from teachers. Andrew’s mum Kirsten is amazed by the transformation, crediting the influence of the Club and its ability to relate to him.

Kirsten said: “Andrew has benefitted hugely from the sessions and is now a lot more compliant at home and in the classroom, which I’m delighted about.

“It’s amazing that the Club puts on a programme like this to engage young people like Andrew who are difficult to reach.”

The scheme, which is currently in its pilot stage, uses the power of the tracksuit to engage some of the most difficult to reach members of society and signpost them through education and on to training, volunteering and employment programmes through the Club.
