The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is celebrating a decade of creating opportunities that change lives and today we bring you the first in a series of features taking a look at some of the Club’s extraordinary yet often unseen work in its community.
In the first of 10 stories told by individuals who have benefited from the ground-breaking work, we meet local resident Joseph, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer seven years ago before being referred to the After Cancer Exercise (ACE) programme.
During the 12-week exercise referral course, delivered as part of the Club’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of local people, Joseph developed a special bond with instructor Emiliano as the sessions helped change his life.
Run by the Foundation’s specialist cancer rehabilitation instructors, anyone living with and beyond cancer in Haringey or Enfield can easily access the free exercise sessions, available on either a group or one-to-one basis at selected Fusion Leisure Centres.
Evidence suggests that physical activity after treatment for cancer can reduce the impact of a number of side effects and in some cases help prevent the cancer reoccurring.
Differing considerably from typical exercise sessions offered by local gyms, ACE gives people affected by cancer the support and motivation to be active, focusing on gentle exercises that promote a steady progression. Development is monitored over a 12-week period where participants are encouraged to reach personal goals.
