Christian Ziege says the mood in the German camp is a positive one despite the fact that public and media expectation is probably at an all-time low.
The German press have been writing off, literally, the chances of Rudi Voller's side in Japan and South Korea - a far cry from the usual wave of optimism that generally surrounds the national team at a major tournament.
Not viewed as one of the better German teams to emerge from modern times, the World Cup squad suffered major critisism after losing a warm-up match to Wales in Cardiff and, of course, a certain 5-1 defeat will take time to shake off.
Christian feels that the low expectation levels could work in the team's favour and release pressure ahead of the tournament - even though the squad retains a healthy air of confidence.
"We have a good mood and are quite confident, even though we didn't play well against Wales - sometimes we have these games," reasoned Christian.
"I think we shouldn't be worried about it, I think we have a good team and have enough time to make an impact at the World Cup.
"Public expectations are quite low. They are more or less thinking we are not good enough to go beyond the first round."
It is quite a swing from the usual feeling that the Germans do well in the 'majors' and are always good for at least the quarter-finals.
"It has changed a little and people are saying we are not good enough and the team is not good enough," pondered Christian. "At the moment it is more against us than with us.
"It could help. Things have been written against us and some people on the street may have the same opinion.
"So the expectations are quite low, which could be good for us."
