EXCLUSIVE - Nacer Chadli's first interview

01 August 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Nacer Chadli feels he's the perfect fit for Spurs.

The Belgian international winger joined us from FC Twente and trained with his new team-mates as we took part in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong.

Nacer spoke exclusively to Spurs TV from the 30th floor of our hotel in Hong Kong - the interview is available now on Spurs TV and free to One Hotspur Members and subscribers.

First of all Nacer, welcome to Spurs. What do you think of your move?
Nacer: "I’m very happy. I was expecting a good transfer this summer and I’ve got it. I’m very happy to join Spurs and I will do my best to make the fans and the club happy."

You appeared to integrate very quickly with the players in Hong Kong.
"I’m happy that Jan and Mousa are already here, they can help me a lot. All the guys are nice guys, so that’s made it easier for me to come into the group."

What do you think of the club and playing in the Premier League?
"It was always a dream for me to play in the Premier League and to play for the right club. Some clubs wanted me this summer but Tottenham Hotspur was the best choice for me and the best club, a club I can fit in to. I played here three years ago for Twente and I was really impressed with the club, the stadium and all the players."

I'm sure fans will remember those matches - what are your memories?
"I remember playing at White Hart Lane, we lost 4-1 but I scored the goal for Twente. I came on after 15 minutes because of an injury and it was unbelievable, the stadium, the feel of the pitch, the supporters so for the team and I liked it. We then drew in the second game and I scored the last goal to make it 3-3. I like the club and the way they play."

Looking at your career in Holland, you scored lots of goals.
"I scored the most goals for Apeldoorn in my last season and also for Twente last season. I’m just getting better and better in front of goal and trying to improve myself. I hope I can make it here in the Premier League, I’m confident."

You score lots of goals for a winger.
"On the wings you normally give more assists, but I scored more goals. It’s important to try and improve every game, to make an assist or a goal to help the team win."

What have Jan and Mousa said about you joining them here at Spurs?
"They said a lot of good things about Spurs. They said ‘you have to come’. I was very happy I made the transfer. I’ve already played with them for the national team and we have good contact. I expect a lot from myself this year and I hope I can make everyone happy."

What are your targets for next season?
"Individually to play as much as possible in the first 11. As a group, I know we want to reach the Champions League places. Last season was too bad the team didn’t make it, but I’m sure we can improve and make the first four."

And at the end of the season, you could be playing in the World Cup with Belgium. How would that feel?
"We still have to play three games but if we win two, we can go to Brazil. We have a lot of good players. We can still do better and improve a lot, but we can make a surprise there. It’s crazy, you would never forget playing in Brazil in the World Cup. We can do it, but we still have to work hard."
