Exclusive! All-time great Puyol on Mauricio
19 January 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
One of the great defenders of the modern era, World Cup winner Carles Puyol is impressed with the coaching ethos of a former rival. That rival? Mauricio Pochettino.
On opposite sides of the Barcelona derby during their playing careers in La Liga - Puyol the famed Barcelona captain, Mauricio at Espanyol - the pair's united love of the game was very much to fore when Carles and Mauricio's former team-mate Ivan de la Pena paid a visit to Hotspur Way last week.
"I think he is a very good coach, one of the best," Carles told Spurs TV. "He has proved it in every team he has been.
"I like his way of understanding football. He likes good football, but with players who show intensity.
"He really enjoys his profession and that is something I love. He is a great coach."

A one-club man, Puyol won the lot at the Nou Camp - 21 major titles including six La Liga championships and the Champions League on three occasions in 2006, 2009 and 2011. Capped 100 times by Spain, he also landed the Euros in 2008 and World Cup in 2010. He retired in May, 2015.
"We have set up a football representation agency with Iván de la Peña," explained Carles. "Iván de la Peña and Mauricio have been close friends since playing together (at Espanyol) and where Mauricio also became a player/coach.
"They have a very good relationship and he is the one who connects us all. He is a great person and manager and I wish him the best always."
