Every Heung-Min Son FA Cup goal in profile

Tue 14 March 2017, 13:06|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son loves an FA Cup goal!

The South Korean international star took his tally in the world-famous competition to six in four games this season with his hat-trick in Sunday's 6-0 win over Millwall, making him the first Spur since Paul Gascoigne in 1990-91, the year we last won the trophy, to net six times in a single FA Cup campaign.

But the 24-year-old's apparent love affair with the tournament didn't just start this season.

Back in January, 2016, he opened his account in spectacular style with a stunning strike in our 2-0 third round replay win at Leicester City.

Like many of our other players, Sonny has previously told us how he'd heard all about the fabled competition before he came to England in 2015: "The FA Cup is the biggest cup in England and I really enjoy it when I play in this competition. It’s great to be able to say I’ve played in the FA Cup!"

As we look forward to a semi-final battle with Chelsea at Wembley, here's a look back at all seven of his FA Cup goals so far...

1. Leicester City 0-2 Spurs

Having battled out a 2-2 draw in our initial third round clash at White Hart Lane, we tried again at the King Power Stadium and, after a relatively quiet opening spell in terms of clear chances, the game exploded into life six minutes before half-time when Son smashed home from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

Erik Lamela passed square to Tom Carroll midway inside the City half, he hit a lovely first-time pass to Son down the right channel on the edge of the area and he shifted the ball to his right before unleashing a powerful shot which beat Kasper Schmeichel and sailed high into the net. Nacer Chadli completed a 2-0 victory in the second half.

“It was a great feeling,” said Sonny afterwards. “Tom played a great pass to me, I had a one versus one with the left-back, I went with my strong foot, my right foot, shot and the shot was very good, I could feel it. I’m very happy to score. It was a great performance.”

2. Spurs 2-0 Aston Villa

Third round

We got this season's campaign underway with a home tie against Championship side Aston Villa in early January.

It took us 71 minutes to get off the mark as left-back Ben Davies scored his first goal in our colours before Son made sure of our place in round four by doubling our tally with 10 minutes left.

Kieran Trippier and Moussa Sissoko combined down the right flank, the latter breaking into the area and cutting the ball back for Son to power a 15-yard drive into the Villa net.

"The first half wasn’t easy because they were standing very deep and we had to find the space," he reflected afterwards.

"In the second half I think Villa were getting a bit tired and we created chances. We had chances to score more and more goals but we’re all happy to go into the next round."

3. Spurs 4-3 Wycombe Wanderers

Fourth round

Given the nod to start up front for us, Sonny was the star of the show as we narrowly avoided a major upset against League Two Wycombe Wanderers at White Hart Lane in the fourth round of this season's campaign.

Having fallen two goals behind, Sonny gave us hope on the hour mark when his corner was headed away, Trippier flicked the ball back out to him and he took a touch and drilled past on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman from a tight angle.

There would be more to come from him later in the game…

4. Spurs 4-3 Wycombe Wanderers

Fourth round

After Vincent Janssen's penalty got us back level at 2-2, Wycombe got their noses in front once again but Dele Alli was on hand to restore parity in the 89th minute before Sonny popped up with a dramatic winner seven minutes into stoppage time.

He picked up the ball wide on the left, played a one-two with Janssen and fired across the six-yard box, the ball ricocheting off Wycombe's Joe Jacobson and flying into the roof of the net to send the Lane into raptures. It was a thrilling end to one of the FA Cup’s classic ties!

"I knew we wouldn’t give up because we had five minutes where we could score," said Sonny afterwards. "That was my feeling. I wasn’t thinking about losing this game. I had that feeling... never give up.

"It (the winner) was a special moment for me and the fans. It’s something crazy.”

5. Spurs 6-0 Millwall

Quarter-final

With Harry Kane departing inside the opening 10 minutes through injury, Son shifted up into the central attacking position for our quarter-final clash with Millwall of League One at White Hart Lane.

After Christian Eriksen opened the scoring just beyond the half-hour mark, Son notched a stylish second four minutes before the interval.

Millwall were on a rare foray forward when the move broke down, Dele Alli led the charge and laid off to the supporting Eric Dier who found Son wide on the right. He cut inside onto his left foot and sent a delightful curling effort past despairing goalkeeper Tom King.

6. Spurs 6-0 Millwall

Sonny grabbed his second and our third goal of the game on 54 minutes.

As we totally controlled proceedings, Trippier clipped a magnificent ball over the defence from out on the right-hand side.

Watching the ball over his shoulder, Son produced a fine first-time volley which flew inside the post.

With Dele and Janssen having put us out of sight, Son found one last chance to complete his hat-trick in the second minute of stoppage time.

Sissoko played in Eriksen down the left and he clipped over a deep cross which Son hit on the volley. The shot was straight at goalkeeper King and he appeared to save the effort, only for the ball to somehow slip from his grasp and dribble through his legs and over the line.

“I really wanted to score that one because I wanted my first hat-trick here, I was really happy when the ball went over the line!" he said. "I was really happy to win this game as well. We deserved to go into the next round.”
