Every Champions League game is important - Mauricio previews APOEL

26 September 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

It might only be the second game of Group H in the UEFA Champions League but Mauricio Pochettino senses the importance of Tuesday night’s clash against APOEL in Nicosia, Cyprus.

We enjoyed a fine victory against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund at Wembley in Matchday One while APOEL were beaten 3-0 by Real Madrid in the Bernabeu.

Dortmund host Madrid in the Westfalenstadion and with one of those teams - both with a draw - set to drop points, Mauricio is determined to make it a perfect start with six points out of six.

At the same time, the manager knows APOEL will be fired up by wanting to put right that 3-0 loss in Madrid in their first group game at home.

“These three points are so important after our victory against Dormtund and in the Champions League, every game is important,” said Mauricio.

“It will be tough. Their fans are so passionate. They played against Real Madrid in their first game, a defeat and for sure, they will want to change that feeling.

“We are ready and excited to play. We are going with a big motivation to play in the Champions League, the best competition in the world with the Premier League. It’s so exciting to have the possibility to play these types of games.”

Mauricio has studied APOEL’s recent matches. “We expect a well-organised team, strong at set-pieces and they have some very good players,” he added.

“It’s true in the last few games they have stuggled in the Cyprus league but it is always different to play in the Champions League. They will be very motivated to play against Tottenham and we will need to be at the same level to try to do the business there.”
