Euro Under-19 winner's medal for Marcus Edwards
15 July 2017|Tottenham Hotspur
Marcus Edwards has become the latest member of our Academy set-up to win big with England this summer.
The attacking midfielder was part of the England Under-19s side that won the European Under-19 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Portugal in the Final on Saturday evening.
Marcus came on as a substitute in the 84th minute at Tengiz Burjanadze Stadium in Gori, Georgia, and along with his team-mates had to put in a shift following the dismissal of Fulham midfielder Tayo Edun for a second bookable offence just four minutes from time.
Despite that late setback, the Young Lions managed to protect their lead to win the trophy at Under-19 level for the first time.
Marcus (centre of picture above, bottom row), who featured in four of England’s five games at the tournament, joins Josh Onomah, Kyle Walker-Peters and Japhet Tanganga as trophy-winners with the Young Lions this summer. Midfielder Josh and full-back Kyle memorably won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup last month, while centre-half Japhet was part of the Under-20s side that won the Toulon Tournament around the same time.
Midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe, defender TJ Eyoma and striker Reo Griffiths were seconds away from picking up winners’ medals at the European Under-17 Championship as well, but agonisingly lost out when Spain equalised late in the Final and then won on penalties.
