Euro 2016 - 'Amazing' homecoming for Ben

09 July 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Ben Davies and his Welsh team-mates returned home to a hero's welcome in Cardiff yesterday – with the defender hoping his team's performances in Euro 2016 can inspire young footballers in his country.

Ben played the first five matches before picking up a heartbreaking suspension for two yellow cards ahead of the semi-final against Portugal.

Playing in their first major championship finals since 1958, Wales topped their group, overcame Northern Ireland and then produced one of the performances of the tournament to beat Belgium in the quarter-final.

However, Portugal came out on top 2-0 in the semi-final.

Fans in Wales responded – tens of thousands lined the streets of Cardiff to welcome the players back with an open-top bus tour ending at a packed Cardiff City Stadium.

"We'd heard about the attention back home but this is something we couldn't have imagined," said Ben. "It's amazing to see so many people out here, phenomenal.

"It's something we probably didn't see Wales football having for a while but we're here now and hopefully we can stay here for years to come.

"We all realise what we've done is something special and to be disappointed at losing a semi-final shows how far we've come.

"Hopefully now we can inspire a generation of footballers in Wales."
