Erik's break

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Erik Edman admitted he needed to cut himself off from football for a month before kicking off his preparations for next season.

The 26-year-old returned to the training ground on Monday to begin pre-season work for a season where he will look to cement his role as left-back at Spurs and hopes will extend to a World Cup appearance in Germany next summer.

Erik’s participation in the European Championships and his switch to Spurs from Heerenveen meant free time was at a premium last summer.

“I really appreciated the time off this summer,” he said. “It was four weeks where I did almost nothing. I needed to freshen up my mind to come back ready to start again.

“You realise how important it is to get a break, not just physically but to freshen up your head as well. Otherwise you can end up feeling jaded in November or December and perhaps risk injury as well.

“Normally I can’t just completely turn off but I’ve been able to these four weeks. I had a week in Sardinia completely relaxing and had a great time. I always like to keep in touch with what is happening but when I was away I didn’t even think about football that much. Perhaps I needed that.”

Meanwhile, Erik was delighted that fans named his stunning strike against Liverpool as the best goal of last season via a vote here on “It was a nice achievement for me and as a left-back, it’s not going to happen that often, so I appreciate it even more!”
