England's top 10 scorers - the Spurs influence

08 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

All eyes will be on Wayne Rooney as England take on Switzerland at Wembley tonight.

The United striker is one goal away from becoming England's all-time record goalscorer.

Take a look down England's all-time goalscorers and you'll see a strong Spurs influence in the top 10.

Gary Lineker is now third in the list behind Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton and scored 18 of his 48-goal international haul during his time at Spurs.

Jimmy Greaves is just one place behind Lineker in fourth with his 44 goals coming in just 57 internationals. Of those 44, Greavsie scored 28 during his time at the Lane.

However, neither Lineker or Greavsie come close to the best strike-rate in the top 10 - and that record belongs to another Spurs great.

Vivian Woodward clocked up a goals-per-game ratio of 1.26 as he bagged 29 goals in 23 England internationals - 27 in 21 as a Spurs player - between 1903-1911.

He scored four hat-tricks for the Three Lions, including a four-goal haul against Austria on June 8, 1908 and his record lasted into the 1950s.

The game's pin-up boy in the early 1900s, he remained an amateur throughout a footballing career and racked up another 57 goals in 44 England Amateur internationals.

One of our all-time greats, Woodward scored 100 goals for us in 197 matches between 1901-1909.

If his record for club and country wasn't enough, Woodward also captained the Great British team to Olympic football gold in 1908 and 1912, served as a Captain in World War One and was good enough at cricket to play for Essex's second XI as a youngster!
