Andros Townsend and Kyle Walker both played 90 minutes as England took on Germany in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday evening – and we followed their every move.
A first half header from Per Mertesacker gave the visitors a 1-0 win, but our right-sided duo combined to good effect throughout the game.
Andros came closest to an equaliser for the Three Lions when his long-range effort struck the post in the second period.
Jermain Defoe was an unused substitute in what was England’s final match of 2013 – a year that saw Roy Hodgson’s side secure qualification for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Here’s a timeline of Andros and Kyle’s movements on Tuesday night...
1.16 – Kyle exchanges passes with Tom Cleverley but the move comes to nothing.
1.30 – Kyle and Andros combine to launch an attack down the right.
1.56 – Andros runs to the byline and hangs a cross up for Daniel Sturridge but the ball is cleared.
4.16 – Kyle cuts out a forward pass intended for Marcel Schmelzer.
4.18 – Andros plays a square ball to Cleverley 18 yards out but the midfielder can’t break through.
8.11 – Andros and Kyle combine again on the right, this time to thwart a German attack.
9.03 – A quick Cleverley free-kick sees Andros drive forward and feed Sturridge, but his shot is blocked.
9.59 – Andros attempts another dribble but Marco Reus intercepts.
11.01 – Kyle wins a header, Andros picks the ball up and tries to play Adam Lallana in behind but it’s cut out.
15.39 – Andros collects the ball and runs at Lars Bender but the German midfielder wins the ball.
16.45 – Kyle plays a great ball to Wayne Rooney but the striker lashes high and wide.
18.48 – Andros starts a four-man move that ends with Kyle getting in a low cross from the right, which is cleared.
23.50 – Another interchange between Kyle and Andros as they attempt to unlock the German defence.
24.26 – Kyle concedes a free-kick after being adjudged to have fouled Mario Gotze.
24.48 – Kyle brings the ball out of defence after a second wave of attack from the visitors.
25.22 – Kyle picks out Rooney with a well-placed long ball, but Rooney is adjudged to have used his arm when controlling it and a free-kick is conceded.
26.35 – Andros with a 50-yard run after Ashley Cole wins possession, the winger feeding Cleverley, but the attack is stamped out.
27.50 – Andros cuts into the box but his low cross is blocked.
29.10 – After a good display of skills on the right, Kyle wins the ball back after momentarily losing possession.
30.01 – Andros picks the ball up on the left after Steven Gerrard’s right-sided corner runs loose, the winger winning another corner.
30.59 – Kyle steers the ball towards Cleverley, but the visitors win a throw.
33.08 – Another Andros run is halted by Germany, but England win the ball back before Sturridge is held up in the box.
34.43 – Andros attempts a cross from the right, but it’s blocked and the ball goes out for an England throw.
38.12 – GOAL – Germany take the lead through Per Mertesacker’s header.
39.37 – Kyle’s free-kick from the right-back position evades the intended target and drifts out for a throw on the opposite flank.
41.38 – Andros tries to dispossess Jerome Boateng but Germany win a throw-in.
42.00 – Kyle gets possession back for England in the right-back position.
42.28 – Andros shows great ball control and plays a lovely reverse pass in to Lallana, but Lallana loses his footing in the box.
43.33 – Andros with some great build-up play on the right before passing infield to Gerrard, whose long-range drive just creeps over the bar.
HALF-TIME – England 0-1 Germany
45.31 – Rooney’s pass finds Andros who causes problems for Marcell Jansen as he wins a corner.
46.24 – Andros flicks the ball into the path of Rooney who finds Sturridge, but the subsequent cross is cleared.
47.40 – Kyle sends the ball down the flank to Andros, but the winger cannot control under pressure from his marker.
48.56 – Andros triggers an England attack as he bursts out of the defence and after input from Rooney, Sturridge crosses for Lallana but the visitors deal with it.
52.51 – Kyle exhibits some nice footwork before feeding Gerrard, who carries the ball out of the defence.
56.38 – WOODWORK – Phil Jagielka finds Andros who drives forward, cuts in from the right and cracks a 30-yard shot towards goal which strikes the base of the post.
57.28 – Andros causes Jansen problems down the flank but Germany survive.
60.49 – Kyle gathers possession on the right and exchanges passes with Andros but Germany win the ball back.
61.28 – Andros concedes a free-kick on the right, but it’s taken quickly and it comes to nothing.
61.48 – Andros and Kyle combine again, the ball is sent over but nobody in an England shirt can make it count.
62.21 – A cross from Andros is headed away by Mats Hummels.
64.19 – Kyle shepherds the ball away after Joe Hart makes a fine low save to deny Mario Gotze.
67.08 – Kyle is quickly across to dispossess Jansen, Andros brings the ball away.
68.04 – Andros attacks down the right, plays the ball in to Jordan Henderson whose pass runs just beyond Sturridge.
69.27 – Kyle accelerates down the right and back-heels the ball towards Andros, with Germany conceding a throw.
76.19 – Andros breaks forward and lays the ball off for Sturridge, but Jansen intercepts.
78.10 – Kyle surges down the wing and gets to the byline, winning a corner.
78.54 – Kyle passes back to keeper Hart after Germany repel an England corner.
80.29 – Andros and Kyle combine to try and salvage a wasted corner, but to no avail.
80.48 – Andros wins the ball from Reus in the right-back position.
85.25 – Kyle seizes the ball in the centre of the field and despatches it back to Hart.
85.57 – A quick corner sees Andros attempt a cross to Ross Barkley, but it’s just too much for the substitute to contend with.
